Spider-Man's New Title (and Photo)

The Spider-Man reboot now has an official title. And we've also got our first official look at the character with his mask on. Check it!

The title is… The Amazing Spider-Man. Just like the comic! And here's the image:

Del Toro, Henson Team for Pinocchio

Guillermo del Toro and The Jim Henson Company have joined forces with Pathe to develop and produce a 3D stop motion animated version of Pinocchio based on the edition of Carlo Collodi's classic tale illustrated by Gris Grimly. Grimly will co-direct with Mark Gustafson (Animation Director on The Fantastic Mr. Fox. The team plans to move forward with production of the film later in 2011.

In this new version of one of the world's best-loved tales, the puppet Pinocchio embarks on a series of extraordinary and thrilling adventures, proving himself to be as indestructible as his love for his father.

Del Toro and his frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins have been developing the screen story over the past year, and Robbins wrote the screenplay. Del Toro will produce with Lisa Henson and Jason Lust of The Jim Henson Company and Allison Abbate (The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie). Gary Ungar will serve as executive producer, as will Francois Ivernel and Cameron McCracken for Pathe. Veteran rock musician and film composer Nick Cave will serve as music consultant for the production.

The team will develop the puppets and other 3D elements with UK-based MacKinnon and Saunders, which has performed the same duties on The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Tim Burton's Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie.

"I believe that our tale of Pinocchio recaptures the darker, more daunting aspects of the book that have been missing from previous film incarnations and takes advantage of all the allegorical aspects of the tale. Gris and Mark have a clear vision of this world. Matthew, the directors and I have constructed an adaptation that I feel enormously proud of," said Guillermo Del Toro.

"Stop motion animation will be a new style of telling this well-known tale, a hand-crafted style with which we were eager to work since it requires a high level of artistry and craftsmanship that is similar to the work of The Jim Henson Company," said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company.

"There is a perfect match between the visionary world of Guillermo, the story of Pinocchio and Gris' wonderful illustrations. The talent and experience of the Henson team will ensure that Gris, Mark and Guillermo's vision comes to life in the most thrilling way," said Francois Ivernel, Executive Vice-President, Pathe.

The Exorcism of Ghost Rider

Nicolas Cage has been talking up his role in the forthcoming Ghost Rider reboot, and it sounds like exorcism will play a part in the film.

Speaking to FearNet while promoting his latest film, Drive Angry 3D, Cage revealed that he will play dual roles in one particular Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance sequence.

"There's an exorcism scene I just did where Johnny Blaze is being exorcised" he explained. "And then I also play Ghost Rider, who's the spirit if Zarathos, who's a corrupted angel. So it's like completely different entities."

He continued "The movie is not like anything I've done before. It's completely original. I think it's a really high adrenaline ride. And I think you'll see things in it that are mysterious as well."

Sounds intriguing, though we'll have to wait until next February to find out if Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is an improvement on the original.

Possible Major League Return?

Charlie Sheen could be set to return to the big-screen as Ricky 'Wild Thing' Vaughn in a proposed Major League sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, David S. Ward - writer-director of the original - has turned in a script that would reunite cast members Wesley Snipes, Corbin Bernsen, Dennis Haysbert and Sheen. Snipes and Haysbert would play coaches to a new batch of players who could potentially reboot the franchise.

Explains Ward "It's 20 years later and Charlie's character has been out of baseball since he gave up the walk-off homerun in the seventh game of the World Series. But the team wants him back to mentor this young fire-balling relief pitcher."

The project still has several hurdles ahead, with Snipes currently serving time in prison for tax evasion as well as Sheen's well-documented recent run-ins with the law.

However Ward says he is confident of snagging the latter, claiming "Charlie is interested in doing it. We're taking the first steps on it. Now it's just a matter of putting the movie together in the timeframe we have. Charlie has a window coming up."

He added "There is no movie without Wild Thing."

Donnie Darko Director's Next

Corpus Christi, the new thriller from Darko Entertainment to be produced by respected industry veterans Eli Roth, Sean McKittrick and Richard Kelly, has finally come into its own with the announcement that the project has a director: none other than Kelly, one of the partners at Darko Entertainment itself, who also penned the script for the modern era thriller. Oh, and he's also the guy who made Donnie Darko.

The film revolves around the contemporary story of Paciencia "Patience" De La Rosa, a mentally unstable individual who served time in the Iraq war, as he adjusts to coming back to the world he knows by befriending his boss, the owner of a large grocery store chain who's looking to become a politician.

More information on Corpus Christi will be divulged within the next month, as the complete cast of both leads and supporting ensemble will be unveiled sometime in March. The film certainly has promise, so it should be interesting to see exactly who is picked out of the crowd to tackle the thriller.

Kevin Costner rumoured for role in new Superman movie

Oscar-winning actor-filmmaker Kevin Costner is reportedly being courted for a role in the next Superman film.

Deadline claims "there is heightened interest in Kevin Costner for a key role in the Superman reboot that is being directed by Zack Snyder for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures."

The site doesn't know which role Costner might be up for, so let's engage in some pure fanboy speculation. Could the Dances With Wolves and JFK star play Pa Kent? Perhaps Jor-El? Daily Planet editor Perry White? Or maybe a villain? The President of the United States?

Halo Director to Helm Die Hard 5

Shoot the glass and give Ellis a can of Coke, Die Hard 5 has found a director.

Noam Murro will helm the film for 20th Century Fox, based on a script by (gulp) Skip Woods, the writer of Hitman and (double gulp) X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Murro's claims to fame are Smart People, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and a series of recent ads for the video game Halo: Reach. Those ads are what "really impressed" the studio brass, according to Deadline.com.

The New York Times' Vulture blog reported that Daniel Espinosa, the director of the upcoming Denzel Washington-Ryan Reynolds CIA thriller Safe House, was this close to getting the gig, but apparently not so much.

Fox still has to get Bruce Willis to sign a deal, but the actor has publicly expressed excitement to reprise his role as John McClane. That last Die Hard film, Live Free or Die Hard, directed by Len Wiseman, was released in 2007 and grossed $384 million worldwide.

The project getting seemingly fast-tracked is somewhat surprising, as the rumor mill said the studio was less than impressed with Woods' script. Not sure what the next steps are there, but IGN will keep you updated, just as soon as we radio Al Powell and take out terrorists with feet smaller than our sister's. (Reference!) 

Chris Nolan's Post-Dark Knight Film

He didn't wear a cape and cowl or prowl the streets of Gotham City at night, but Howard Hughes was just as... eccentric, shall we say, as his fellow loco-in-the-coco billionaire, Bruce Wayne. And now Christopher Nolan, who is about to make his third Batman film, is reportedly planning on tackling a Hughes biopic after that.

Vulture has the report, which says that the filmmaker wants to revisit the Hughes film which he had to abandon back in 2004 when Martin Scorsese's own bio film about the famed aviator got to theaters first.

"While Scorsese's film is understood to have been heavily based on Charles Higham's biography Howard Hughes: The Secret Life and centered largely on the early years of Hughes' life up to 1947," says the site, "we hear Nolan's movie is based on Michael Drosnin's Citizen Hughes: The Power, the Money and the Madness … and would focus on the freakier decades of Hughes remarkably secretive and OCD-addled life."

You know, the "wears tissue boxes for shoes" and "pees in glass jars" decades. 

When writing Citizen Hughes, Drosnin had access to over 3,000 pages of Hughes' own handwritten notes. That means we could see any of the following (apparently true) nuggets from his life story:

-- The time Hughes spent (most of 1948) "sitting naked in a bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel with only a pink dinner napkin covering his genitals as he screened movies from his studio, RKO Pictures."

-- "Obsessed with food safety -- [he] once bought every franchise restaurant chain in his home state of Texas." (He also installed an aircraft filtration system in his Chrysler because of his concerns about air quality.)

-- The period when he had his hair cut and nails trimmed only once a year. Also, the time when he was addicted to Baskin Robbins Banana Ripple ice cream and codeine injections.

-- The later years for Hughes when he "considered only Mormons trustworthy enough to be let into his inner circle."

And so on. Vulture's inside sources indicate that the plan is to shoot this film in 2012 for a 2014 release. 

Theron Set for Ridley Scott's Prometheus

Prometheus, which not very long ago was Ridley Scott's Alien prequel, now has a star to anchor its cast: Charlize Theron has signed on to the 20th Century Fox film.

Variety has the news, confirming longstanding rumors that the Aeon Flux actress was up for the gig. Yes, we just cited the Aeon Flux movie! 

The actress joins the previously announced Noomi Rapace (the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and Michael Fassbender (Magneto in the upcoming X-Men: First Class). Previous reports indicate that Theron will be playing a character called Vickers, Rapace is heading up the cast as the main female protagonist Elizabeth Shaw and Fassbender will take on the role of an android.

Prometheus began life as a prequel to Scott's Alien, but he and writer Damon Lindelof (Lost) ultimately took the project in a new direction. 

Roger Deakins May Shoot Bond 23

James Bond's newest movie has Oscar-winner Sam Mendes directing, and it might be getting a potential Oscar-winner as its cinematographer.

Roger Deakins, who recently DP'd The Coen Brothers' True Grit, is this close to signing on to Bond 23.

Collider.com recently interviewed Deakins and, when asked what his next project will be, Deakins hinted that he'll "probably do a film with Sam Mendes next." When Collider asked if that meant he was shooting Bond 23, he said, "it might, yeah." *Does happy dance, fires pistols into the air*

Deakins, who has worked with the Coen Brothers on several films, is nominated for an Oscar this year for his work on 2010's Grit. Deakins is best known for his outstanding photography in such films as The Shawshank Redemption and No Country For Old Men.

Ryan Gosling Cast in Logan's Run Remake

Via Deadline today, we're hearing that the long-rumored Logan's Run remake is finally getting some momentum, with Ryan Gosling attached to star and Nicolas Winding Refn attached as director. The previously worked together on the upcoming action film Drive, due this fall, so the partnership makes sense. 

For those who don't remember, the 1976 movie (based on the book by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson) is set in a future in which society has moved underground and all those who reach the age of 30 must submit to a deadly ritual called "carousel." Gosling (who just turned 30 himself) will play Logan 5, a "Sandman" whose job is to catch the geezers who try to escape their fate. That is, until he is forced to become a runner himself.

Silver Pictures' Joel Silver and Andrew Rona are producing with Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman, with Kerry Foster exec producing. According to Deadline, production starts in the fall. 

Shane Black's Iron Man 3?

Oh it's good to be a geek: Shane Black is in the running to write and direct Iron Man 3 for Marvel Studios.

The Hollywood Reporter has the story, which reports that the writer of Lethal Weapon has met with Marvel execs to discuss his take on the third movie in Tony Stark's franchise.

The Reporter notes that "Black's involvement is far from a sure thing," and that other filmmakers are under consideration. The director of the previous two movies, Jon Favreau, left the franchise in 2010.

If Black has any "inside track" with the property, it's that he has worked with the film's star, Robert Downey, Jr. before, on Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, which Black also wrote and directed. (Downey's contract gives him approval on who can direct the film.) 

Black, who made his career writing big-payday action movies like 1987's Lethal Weapon and 1996's The Long Kiss Goodnight (which starred Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson!), is having a career resurgence of late. He was recently tapped to adapt the manga Death Note for Warner Bros., and work on Sony's Doc Savage movie.

Little is known about Iron Man 3, other than it stars Downey Jr. and will be released May 3, 2013. 

Shawn Levy Takes a Fantastic Voyage

Coolio is not the only one about to ride on a Fantastic Voyage, as 20th Century Fox has finally got their man to helm the brand new James Cameron production that has been gaining buzz despite the challenge of a whopping budget.

Shawn Levy has been tapped to take the role of director for the remake, giving the feature what could be a light-hearted tone, given Levy's experience with his hit Night at the Museum movies and the Steve Martin family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen. Fantastic Voyage will be yet another 3D feature.

Deadline has the scoop about the film, which is a new take on an old favorite, where a crack team of scientists decide to take the plunge into a dear colleague's body to save his life.

Levy replaces Bourne director Paul Greengrass, who was briefly attached to the film.

Captain America Poster Debuts

The first one-sheet for Captain America: The First Avenger has debuted online, courtesy of Marvel and Paramount. And it's pretty sweet nod to Ed Brubaker's work.

Fittingly, Marvel.com premiered the Cap poster, which is a huge nod to a Brubaker comic book cover. Here's a taste of the one-sheet, which is exclusive to Marvel right now.

The first trailer will be shown at the Super Bowl.

Ralph Fiennes Rumored for James Bond 23

Ralph Fiennes is reportedly under consideration for a "darkly complex" role in Bond 23, one that is said to be different from the villain role that Javier Bardem has been offered.

Granted, the story comes from a British paper, The Daily Mail, but what they have to say is quite intriguing:

"Fiennes is not interested in the usual run-of-the-mill action picture, but he was intrigued when he was told of [director Sam] Mendes's 'revolutionary' plans for Bond 23. 'It's the first of a new generation of Bond films, and the ideas Mendes has push the film into darker territory where the characters are modern, mature and challenging,' a film executive in Los Angeles connected to the production told me. At the moment, the situation with Fiennes is purely at the discussion stage." (It should be noted that Fiennes and Mendes are old friends from the British theater scene.)

Ironically, Ralph Fiennes played secret agent John Steed in the big screen version of the TV classic The Avengers, opposite original 007 Sean Connery. Fiennes himself was long rumored to be up for the 007 role himself back in the day.

Bond 23 will see Daniel Craig back as 007 and Judi Dench as M. 

Kristen Stewart Almost Snow White

The rumors are true: Kristen Stewart just might play the titular princess in Snow White and the Huntsman.

The Hollywood Reporter says the Twilight actress is in negotiations with Universal to play Snow White in the Rupert Sanders-directed fantasy film.

"The deal is not done and could still fall apart, but both sides want it to happen," the trade cautions.

Charlize Theron will play the evil queen opposite Viggo Mortensen

Fletch Lives

Fletch lives. Then he doesn't live. Then he lives again. Right now he's at the "live again" stage.

Heat Vision is reporting that the franchise -- known to most of us for Chevy Chase's big-screen interpretation -- is on the move again in Hollywood. Warner Bros. has "preemptively" picked up the movie rights to the Gregory Mcdonald novels featuring the sleuthing character. 

A Fletch reboot has been discussed before. After Chase made Fletch in 1985 and Fletch Lives in 1989, Miramax attempted to revive the character for years. Kevin Smith was attached for a time, but the project never went anywhere despite everyone from Ben Affleck to Jason Lee being considered for the role. Or maybe because of?

The Warners version has no writer or director signed on yet, but the studio is "aiming for a reimagining, not a remake, and hope to make a smart action comedy that plays out on a bigger canvas than the previous movies." 

Pet Sematary Reopened

Hollywood is resurrecting the Stephen King tale Pet Sematary for one more chance at cinematic life.

According to Los Angeles Times, screenwriter Matt Greenberg (who also scripted the King adaptation 1408) "is set to turn in his script for a new version of the tale, according to a person briefed on the project who was not authorized to speak about it publicly. And executives at studio Paramount have put out the word to at least two representatives in the agent community that they are seeking a high-level director to tackle the material."

The story was originally brought to the screen in 1989 starring Dale Midkiff, Fred Gwynne, Denise Crosby and Miko Hughes. The less celebrated sequel Pet Sematary Two, starring Edward Furlong, Anthony Edwards and Clancy Brown, debuted in 1992.

Captain America's Bucky Revealed

The Los Angeles Times debuted an image of a battle-hardened Captain America (Chris Evans) and Bucky in World War II. (Coming Soon also points out some scanned images of Stan as Bucky, as well as Hydra agents, that originally appeared at a French site.)

"Sebastian brought something really interesting and slightly on the dark side and really compelling to watch — when he's on camera, you're fascinated by watching him," director Joe Johnston told the Times.

He added, "You know, he was originally up for the lead, for the Steve Rogers role, but he didn't have quite the same earnest, I-want-to-fight-for-my-country aura that Chris has for this role. Sebastian has a little bit of the bad boy, he's a little bit of the James Dean type and that goes somewhat counter to the general perception of Steve Rogers. He wasn't quite right for Captain America, but I think he's perfect for Bucky because, really, he can have a little bit of that dark side." 

Cooper Talks Captain America

Dominic Cooper had "great fun" portraying young Howard Stark in this summer's Captain America: The First Avenger.

Vulture recently chatted with Cooper at the Sundance Film Festival, where he dished a few details on his experience working on the WWII-set Marvel movie and playing Iron Man's dad.

"We learn the whole idea of where Stark Industries comes from, which is out of pure curiosity and creative juices and excitement towards thinking of the future and developing things for good," said Cooper. "He's a Howard Hughes. He's a guy that loves inventing, that's extremely intelligent, and that loves his lifestyle as well."

As for Stark's overall presence in the film, Cooper said, "He's important because he's part of the machinery that helps Captain America manipulate his body."

Howard Stark is not yet a father in Captain America, but he's definitely a skirt-chaser who Cooper said seems "like he's just come from somewhere in a tuxedo, from showing people his inventions and his new flying machines."

Die Hard 5 Villian Rumours

 The Die Hard franchise has never pitted hero John McClane (Bruce Willis) against a better antagonist than the baddie of the first film, Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman).

Now it sounds like the upcoming Die Hard 24/7 may take a page from Die Hard With a Vengeance, which saw McClane battling Hans' brother, Simon Gruber (Jeremy Irons).


What's Playing claims "that the villain of this upcoming movie could be another 'Gruber'. ... It has been said a new Gruber sibling is in the works. If true, I'm doubting another brother and the 'son of Gruber' idea would be ridiculous, however a Gruber sister/daughter concept is truly an interesting one."

Superman Buzz: Who's Lois Lane?

 Twilight's Kristen Stewart is among the handful of actresses rumored to be in the running to play Daily Planet reporter and love interest Lois Lane in director Zack Snyder's Superman reboot.

According to What's Playing, there are a few actresses said to have been asked to read (or that have already read) for the female lead in the Man of Steel's big screen return.


The site claims that in addition to Stewart the list includes Dianna Agron (Glee, I Am Number Four), Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes, Morning Glory), Jessica Biel (who also tested for the Catwoman role in The Dark Knight Rises), and Malin Akerman, who played Silk Spectre II in Snyder's Watchmen.
 
They add that they've also heard Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim, Die Hard 4) and Lake Bell (No Strings Attached, Childrens' Hospital) mentioned by less immediate sources, so they're downplaying those rumors.
