Danny Boyle's 'Trance' gets a release date

We haven't heard that much about Danny Boyle's 'Trance' this year, but that's not too surprising since he was busy taking every British thing ever and putting it into the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics.  

The movie centers on an art heist that goes sideways when its mastermind (James McAvoy) gets amnesia and can’t remember where he stashed the loot.  Vincent Cassell co-stars as mob boss leading the heist gang, and Rosario Dawson plays a hypnotist who tries to get the memories out of McAvoy’s character.  

Boyle shot the film back in 2011, but he held off on post-production until he was done with the Olympics. Now that those are finished, work on Trance has resumed, and a U.K. release may have been announced. Trance is reportedly set to open in the United Kingdom on March 27, 2013.

Len Wiseman gives an update on 'The Mummy' Reboot

Underworld and Total Recall director Len Wiseman has revealed that his reboot of The Mummy won't be a period piece like the last three entries in the Universal franchise.

Speaking to Movieweb, Wiseman said, "The difference between the two, if The Mummy is to be the next movie for me, is that The Mummy is a completely different film. It is a modern day take. It doesn't have anything to do with the Brendan Fraser films, and it is not a remake of any kind."

The director added, "It's horror. Its epic. It's more of a modern day version of what would happen if we came across a mummy in our world today. It is pretty fascinating."

Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) is scripting for producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Transformers) and Mummy series veterans Sean Daniels and Jim Jacks.

Producer offers an update on the 'Godzilla" reboot

We haven't heard much from director Gareth Edwards or the rest of the Godzilla camp since we were first shown the initial test footage of the pic at San Diego Comic-Con.

However, while doing interviews for Gangster Squad, producer Dan Lin offered an update on the epic kaiju remake, which is scheduled to begin filming this March. "Gareth [Edwards] has really mapped out his vision for the movie," Lin told Collider. "You saw the teaser, but Gareth -- thanks to [Legendary CEO] Thomas Tull’s help -- he took over a whole stage on the Warner [Bros.] lot and not only showed the teaser you saw, he had some models built of Godzilla, he had art decorated all over the soundstage, he had pre-vis of some of the big action sequences in the movie.

"So we're in deep pre-production and Gareth's vision of the movie is really exciting, it's a true reboot of Godzilla," he continued. "And you saw from the Comic-Con footage it is a grounded, realistic version of Godzilla. What would happen if Godzilla came into our world today?"

According to Lin, Godzilla could shoot in Vancouver, although he wouldn't say if the Japanese icon would be returning to its native waters. "I don't want to give any plot details right now," he said. "I want you guys to be surprised."

Tron 3 moving forward

Walt Disney Studios is moving forward with the planned sequel to 2010’s TRON: Legacy, and has tapped Jesse Wigutow (Peter and the Starcatchers, Eragon) to pen the script based on a previous draft from David DiGilio, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

It is now being reported that Garrett Hedlund will reprise his role as Sam Flynn, son of the original Tron's Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), in the film. The casting update essentially puts rumors that this will be a full reboot to bed.

In a recent interview with NextMovie, the actor indicated (in fairly vague terms) that he will indeed return for Tron 3. We cannot confirm, however, how large or small his role may be. Nor is it clear whether or not TRON: Legacy co-star Olivia Wilde will return as the digital miracle Quorra.

Details on the project are few, but it was previously said that the film would deal with the question of life and death in the digital realm. It may or may not involve a connection to the Tron: Uprising television series. If there were a link to the TV show, it may include an appearance from Alan Bradley/Tron himself, Bruce Boxleitner.

Of course, if Tron himself plays a role in the story then one or two things would need some explaining.

TRON: Legacy eventually earned $400 million in worldwide box-office sales. Helmer Joseph Kosinski is set to return to the director’s chair for this third installment in the franchise.

Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine for X-Men First Class Sequel

Bryan Singer has confirmed that Hugh Jackman is the latest addition to the cast of his X-Men: First Class sequel, Days of Future Past.

Jackman, currently earning Oscar buzz as Jean Valjean in Tom Hooper’s critically-acclaimed adaptation of Les Miserables, is already set to star as the adamantine-clawed mutant in next year’s The Wolverine, from Copland director James Mangold.

As reported by Den of Geek, Singer verified Jackman’s involvement on his Twitter account, officially welcoming the Aussie to the cast, while promising “more to come”. This will be the seventh time Jackman has worn the claws, including his brief cameo in First Class. Singer, meanwhile, has replaced Matthew Vaughn in the director’s chair.

Ricky Gervais in talks to join 'The Muppets' sequel

British comedian Ricky Gervais is currently in negotiations to star as the human lead in Disney's The Muppets Sequel.

Should a deal go through, Gervais would join the recently cast Ty Burrell, who replaced Christoph Waltz as the lazy interpol inspector.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gervais' part is being compared to the role played by Jason Segel in the 2011 Muppets movie. However, with the script still under lock and key, it is uncertain how this new character will play into the story.

The first film's James Bobin is returning to direct. He co-wrote the script with Nicholas Stoller.

Vin Diesel is 'Kojak'

Two veteran James Bond movie screenwriters will bring the classic small screen cop Kojak to the big screen with none other than Vin Diesel in the title role of NYPD Lieutenant Detective Theo Kojak.

According to Deadline, Universal has tapped Neal Purvis & Robert Wade (Skyfall, Die Another Day) to script Kojak. Diesel will also produce the film with Samantha Vincent.

The TV series ran on CBS from 1973-78 and made Savalas, then best known for (usually bad guy) roles in films such as On Her Majesty's Secret Service and The Dirty Dozen, into an international sex symbol.

Savalas would later reprise the role in later TV movies. Kojak loved himself some cigarettes and lollipops and was known for his catchphrase "Who loves ya, baby?" The character was a composite of several real-life NYPD detectives.

Ving Rhames most recently played Kojak in a short-lived TV series revival.

First Image of Tom Hardy as Mad Max

Earlier this morning a blurry signed image of Tom Hardy hit the net, with some outlets claiming it to be our first look at the actor in Warner Bros.' Mad Max 4: Fury Road. Here's the picture in question (as first revealed by Ain't It Cool News):

Now, according to Indie Wire, the studio has confirmed that this is indeed an image taken from George Miller's film, which wrapped shooting on Monday. Apparently, this signed picture was something Hardy gave to the crew as a parting gift on set.

Mad Max 4: Fury Road is slated for a 2014 release in 3D.

Chuck could be in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

The lead role of Peter Quill, the part-human/part-alien hero better known as Star-Lord, in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is close to being cast. Variety reports that the two frontrunners are Cloud Atlas' Jim Sturgess and Chuck's Zachary Levi, who is currently playing Fandral in Marvel's Thor: The Dark World. (He replaced Josh Dallas in that role.)

Sturgess was among the five actors who recently screen-tested for the role; Levi was not in that group. "Marvel is said to be impressed with (Levi's) Guardians test and open to continuing their relationship. Marvel has had its eye on Levi for a while, as he had been in talks to play Fandral in the original Thor before NBC decided to order more episodes of Chuck," says the trade. Variety adds, "While Levi and Sturgess remain frontrunners to play Star-Lord, sources caution that an unnamed third actor may be tested after the holidays."

Guardians of the Galaxy, to be directed by James Gunn, opens August 1, 2014.

James Cameron to direct 'The Informationist'

Lightstorm Entertainment has acquired the film rights to The Informationist, based on the acclaimed 2011 novel from Taylor Stevens. James Cameron will direct the film for 20th Century Fox. Lightstorm's Jon Landau will produce alongside Cameron.

The story centers on Vanessa "Michael" Monroe, "an information specialist, whose work is in-demand by  corporations, heads of state, private clients, and anyone else who can pay for her unique brand of expertise. When a Texas oil billionaire hires her to find his daughter who vanished in Africa four years ago. Munroe finds herself back in the lands of her childhood. Betrayed, cut off from civilization, and left for dead, she must come face-to-face with the past that she’s tried for so long to forget."

Said Cameron, "Taylor Stevens' Vanessa Michael Munroe is an intriguing and compelling heroine with an agile mind and a thirst for adventure. Equally fascinating for me is her emotional life and her unexpected love story. I'm looking forwarding to bringing Vanessa and her world to the big screen." Current plans are for Cameron to direct the once he's finished working on the second and third Avatar films.

Although Cameron has claimed in recent years that he's strictly in "the Avatar business" from here on out, it seems the filmmaker has opened up to the idea of taking on other features later down the line. In addition to The Informationist, Cameron has expressed an interest in directing Battle Angel as well.

Johnny Depp may star in 'Transcendence'

It looks like Johnny Depp will star in The Dark Knight cinematographer Wally Pfister's directing debut Transcendence, a sci-fi film that Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas will exec produce.

The Hollywood Reporter says "the film is described as in the vein of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Inception. The story centers on a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness. Depp will play a husband who gets sucked into the computer, contingent on changes Pfister is making to the script, sources say."

Prometheus actress Noomi Rapace is up for the female lead, while Tobey Maguire and James McAvoy are in the running for the other male lead. Christoph Waltz has been offered a key supporting role.

“I'm thrilled and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny," said Pfister. "He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative."

Transcendence begins filming early next year. Alcon is producing with Warner Bros. set to distribute.

Shailene Woodley to play Mary Jane in sequels to 'The Amazing Spiderman'

Last week, it was reported that Shailene Woodley was in negotiations for the coveted role of Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This news was confirmed earlier today, as was the actress' likely involvement in Spidey 3.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Descendants star initially had scheduling issues with the part, having had offers to play both Mary Jane and the lead in Summit-Lionsgate's feature adaptation of Divergent. However, the MJ role is proving to be a very small one in the upcoming sequel, and will blossom into a more integral lead in the planned third film as Sony moves forward with the "Death of Gwen Stacy" storyline from the comics.

As a result, Woodley should have time to shoot both Spidey 2 and Divergent. The actress is currently closing a deal for the latter, which has Neil Burger directing.

Disney buy Lucasfilm and plan to make a new Star Wars Trilogy

Disney announces in an investor conference call after today's announcement that they intend to make more than one new Star Wars movie, beginning with Episode VII in 2015 followed by Episodes VIII and IX "every other year" and then "we'll go from there."

Not only did the news break today that the Walt Disney Company has acquired Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion, but the studio press release also announces that a Star Wars: Episode VII feature film is targeted for a 2015 release! Yes, 2015 will give us The Avengers 2, Justice League of America and now a new Star Wars movie!

This deal means Disney also now owns the Indiana Jones franchise as well as effects firm Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound.

Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock on October 26, 2012, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing. The final consideration will be subject to customary post-closing balance sheet adjustments.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

Bond 24 and 25 already in development

As Skyfall opens in the U.K. today, James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson have quietly hired Skyfall writer John Logan to pen not one but two 007 films.

According to Deadline, the writer pitched an original two-movie arc while Skyfall was in production, and he has already begun writing the scripts.

A successful playwright, Logan has also worked on such films as Gladiator, Hugo, The Aviator, The Last Samurai and Star Trek: Nemesis. He also wrote the screenplay for Darren Aronofsky's forthcoming biblical epic Noah, starring Russel Crowe.

The Wolverine set after X-Men: The Last Stand

For many, it was assumed that director James Mangold's upcoming The Wolverine would act as followup to 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Given that this new film is set in Japan, coupled with the after-credits sequence of Logan in Japan from the previous film, it was widely assumed that The Wolverine would be a direct sequel leading up to Bryan Singer's X-Men from 2000.

However, Mangold recently said this isn't the case. In fact, The Wolverine isn't a prequel at all. "Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all," the filmmaker told Empire. "Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there's a tremendous sense of isolation for him."

Having said that, there will still be some sequences set during World War II, but the rest of the film will take place post-X-Men: The Last Stand.

"That's something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline," Mangold continued. "I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that's such an interesting part of Logan's character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie."

While most X-Men films have been categorized as "comic book action adventure," Mangold said this latest entry is more of a "Japanese noir picture with tentpole action in it."

The Wolverine stars Hugh Jackman, and is scheduled for release on July 26, 2013.

Arnold Schwarzenegger returns in 'Ten'

Here's your first look at Arnold Schwarzenegger in the upcoming cop action-thriller Ten, directed by End of Watch's David Ayer.

In Ten, an elite DEA task force deals with the world's deadliest drug cartels. Specializing in complex mobile operations, the team executes a tactical raid on a cartel safe house. What looks to be a typical raid turns out to be an elaborate theft operation, pre-planned by the DEA squad.

After hiding millions in stolen cash, the team believes their secret is safe – until someone begins assassinating them one by one.

George Clooney to direct 'The Monuments Men'

Oscar winner George Clooney has assembled a stellar ensemble cast for his next directing effort, The Monuments Men.

According to Deadline, Clooney has cast Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett,Jean Dujardin (who beat Clooney in the Best Actor Oscar race last year), John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville and Bob Balaban. Yes, we will finally have that movie where Batman, Bond, Peter Venkman, Galadriel, and Fred Flintstone will all share the screen together!

The World War II drama, which is a Sony/Fox co-production, reportedly "confronts the final chapter of Germany’s rule, which came down to the absolute destruction of everything that makes a culture keep its standing, including the lives that are lost and the sacrifices that are made. All of this is in danger of being lost forever as Hitler and the Nazis try to cover the tracks of a murderous regime. A crew of art historians and museum curators unite to recover renown works of art that were stolen by Nazis before Hitler destroys them."

Clooney also co-wrote the script with his Smokehouse producing partner Grant Heslov, adapting the 2009 book by Robert Edsel. The score will be done by Alexander Desplat (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Parts 1 and 2). Filming begins March 1 in Europe.

First Poster of Padddington Bear Movie

The first promo poster for the feature film adaptation of the children’s book character Paddington Bear has gone online. Paddington will feature a mix of CGI and live-action, with the titular teddy bear being created using CGI animation. 


Author Michael Bond’s best selling books center on “a brown bear from Peru who is found at Paddington station by the Brown family,” and Paddington is being brought to the screen by Harry Potter producer David Heyman. 


The poster boasts a 2014 release date, so it’ll presumably be awhile before we see any footage from the picture. Paul King (The Mighty Boosh) is directing, and this poster teases Paddington’s adorable signature outfit consisting of a raincoat and hat.

Voice and live-action casting has yet to be announced.

Popeye coming to the Big Screen

Although Genndy Tartakovsky’s first feature film as a director is the upcoming Adam Sandler-starrer, Hotel Transylvania, he’ll quickly turn around and direct Popeye as his second. Tartakovsky is best known for his phenomenal TV series work with a roster including The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars. Writers Jay Scherick and David Ronn (The Smurfs) were attached to pen the Popeye adaptation as recently as last November. 

Variety reports that Tartakovsky is attached to develop and direct a 3D version of Popeye. 

The famous sailor started back in 1929 when he first appeared in the comicstrip, “Thimble Theater.” Known for his bizarre manner of speech and his borderline addiction to spinach, Popeye is one of the longest-running comics in history. There have been numerous cartoon iterations and one abysmal live-action feature: 1980′s Popeye, starring Robin Williams. 

Some of the other famous characters from the world of Popeye include the waif, Olive Oyl; Popeye’s adopted son, Swee’Pea, the hamburger-eating Wimpy and the antagonistic Bluto. Sony’s production on a CG/3D version of Popeye goes back at least two years now. The 3D animated feature about the famous cartoon sailor is being produced through Sony Pictures Animation along with Avi and Ari Arad under their Arad Productions banner.  

Rosie Hunting-Whiteley joins Mad Max 4: Fury Road

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) has just been cast in George Miller's upcoming Mad Max 4: Fury Road.

JustJared.com reports that the 25-year-old actress will be joining Zoe Kravitz and Riley Keough as one of the "five wives" in the action film. Explained Kravitz, "There’s a group of five women being taken from one place to another place, and I’m one of those women. So they call us the five wives. There are five women who are five wives. No, I’m not playing all five wives."

Justin Timberlake eyed for Baywatch the Movie

Paramount Pictures is reportedly on the prowl for Justin Timberlake to run along the beach in slow-motion for their upcoming Baywatch film.

According to Twitch, Timberlake would play a disgraced ex-Olympic swimmer who joins up with the Baywatch crew -- and yes, the writers have already assured the fans that roles have been written for David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, should they accept them.

The big screen adaptation has been in the works for a while now, with Ivan Reitman, Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson on board to produce.

Charlie Sheen joins Machete Kills

It looks like Charlie Sheen will be following in his father's footsteps as the President of the United States. But instead of NBC's The West Wing, Sheen will be White Housing in Machete Kills.

Director Robert Rodriguez made the announcement yesterday via Twitter, where he wrote, "I just cast Charlie Sheen in #machetekills as the President of the United States! Who better? More soon..." Sheen then retweeted the message, and a rep for the actor confirmed the negotiations to The Hollywood Reporter.

As previously reported, the story follows Machete (Danny Trejo) as he is recruited by the U.S. government to take down a dangerous cartel leader and an arms dealer, who have a weapon in space.
Between Sheen and Mel Gibson, things are really starting to shape up for the grindhouse sequel, which is currently filming in Texas.

New writers hired for Jurassic Park IV

The screenwriting duo behind Rise of the Planet of the Apes have signed on to create the script for Jurassic Park IV.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver will be penning the latest tale of prehistoric peril, suggesting that there have been a few shake ups since we last heard anything.

Spielberg previously announced that Mark Protosevich, who wrote the script for I Am Legend, would provide the screenplay for the title.  

It's not yet clear if this means the story he had in mind will change, though it's comforting to know that Jaffa and Silver have written about super-intelligent, human-hunting animals on their last job.

No release window has been revealed, but the original Jurassic Park is due to be re-released in the US after having the 3D treatment on July 19th 2013, with UK screenings to follow.

Hugh Laurie in talks for RoboCop

Hugh Laurie is done with House, but he's moving on to RoboCop!

The actor is in talks to play the villain in MGM and Sony's remake of the classic picture.

Jose Padilha (Elite Squad: The Enemy Within) is directing, with Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) taking the title role. Gary Oldman and Sam Jackson have also been previously cast.

Elysium Plot Revealed

Apart from the film's star-studded cast and a statement claiming it would feature Anglo-Hispanic racial tensions, not much has been said about Neill Blomkamp's next major feature project Elysium. Now, however, the District 9 director has provided an official plot synopsis describing his new sci-fi pic:

"In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds."

Twitch Film notes that Foster's Secretary Rhodes is an obvious reference to British colonialist, diamond miner and very clear racist Cecil Rhodes. Not unlike District 9, it sounds like Elysium will be further exploring allegories relating to apartheid, specifically a comparison between the treatment of blacks in South Africa to Hispanics in America.
