Tron 3 moving forward

Walt Disney Studios is moving forward with the planned sequel to 2010’s TRON: Legacy, and has tapped Jesse Wigutow (Peter and the Starcatchers, Eragon) to pen the script based on a previous draft from David DiGilio, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

It is now being reported that Garrett Hedlund will reprise his role as Sam Flynn, son of the original Tron's Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), in the film. The casting update essentially puts rumors that this will be a full reboot to bed.

In a recent interview with NextMovie, the actor indicated (in fairly vague terms) that he will indeed return for Tron 3. We cannot confirm, however, how large or small his role may be. Nor is it clear whether or not TRON: Legacy co-star Olivia Wilde will return as the digital miracle Quorra.

Details on the project are few, but it was previously said that the film would deal with the question of life and death in the digital realm. It may or may not involve a connection to the Tron: Uprising television series. If there were a link to the TV show, it may include an appearance from Alan Bradley/Tron himself, Bruce Boxleitner.

Of course, if Tron himself plays a role in the story then one or two things would need some explaining.

TRON: Legacy eventually earned $400 million in worldwide box-office sales. Helmer Joseph Kosinski is set to return to the director’s chair for this third installment in the franchise.

Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine for X-Men First Class Sequel

Bryan Singer has confirmed that Hugh Jackman is the latest addition to the cast of his X-Men: First Class sequel, Days of Future Past.

Jackman, currently earning Oscar buzz as Jean Valjean in Tom Hooper’s critically-acclaimed adaptation of Les Miserables, is already set to star as the adamantine-clawed mutant in next year’s The Wolverine, from Copland director James Mangold.

As reported by Den of Geek, Singer verified Jackman’s involvement on his Twitter account, officially welcoming the Aussie to the cast, while promising “more to come”. This will be the seventh time Jackman has worn the claws, including his brief cameo in First Class. Singer, meanwhile, has replaced Matthew Vaughn in the director’s chair.

Ricky Gervais in talks to join 'The Muppets' sequel

British comedian Ricky Gervais is currently in negotiations to star as the human lead in Disney's The Muppets Sequel.

Should a deal go through, Gervais would join the recently cast Ty Burrell, who replaced Christoph Waltz as the lazy interpol inspector.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gervais' part is being compared to the role played by Jason Segel in the 2011 Muppets movie. However, with the script still under lock and key, it is uncertain how this new character will play into the story.

The first film's James Bobin is returning to direct. He co-wrote the script with Nicholas Stoller.

Vin Diesel is 'Kojak'

Two veteran James Bond movie screenwriters will bring the classic small screen cop Kojak to the big screen with none other than Vin Diesel in the title role of NYPD Lieutenant Detective Theo Kojak.

According to Deadline, Universal has tapped Neal Purvis & Robert Wade (Skyfall, Die Another Day) to script Kojak. Diesel will also produce the film with Samantha Vincent.

The TV series ran on CBS from 1973-78 and made Savalas, then best known for (usually bad guy) roles in films such as On Her Majesty's Secret Service and The Dirty Dozen, into an international sex symbol.

Savalas would later reprise the role in later TV movies. Kojak loved himself some cigarettes and lollipops and was known for his catchphrase "Who loves ya, baby?" The character was a composite of several real-life NYPD detectives.

Ving Rhames most recently played Kojak in a short-lived TV series revival.

First Image of Tom Hardy as Mad Max

Earlier this morning a blurry signed image of Tom Hardy hit the net, with some outlets claiming it to be our first look at the actor in Warner Bros.' Mad Max 4: Fury Road. Here's the picture in question (as first revealed by Ain't It Cool News):

Now, according to Indie Wire, the studio has confirmed that this is indeed an image taken from George Miller's film, which wrapped shooting on Monday. Apparently, this signed picture was something Hardy gave to the crew as a parting gift on set.

Mad Max 4: Fury Road is slated for a 2014 release in 3D.

Chuck could be in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

The lead role of Peter Quill, the part-human/part-alien hero better known as Star-Lord, in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is close to being cast. Variety reports that the two frontrunners are Cloud Atlas' Jim Sturgess and Chuck's Zachary Levi, who is currently playing Fandral in Marvel's Thor: The Dark World. (He replaced Josh Dallas in that role.)

Sturgess was among the five actors who recently screen-tested for the role; Levi was not in that group. "Marvel is said to be impressed with (Levi's) Guardians test and open to continuing their relationship. Marvel has had its eye on Levi for a while, as he had been in talks to play Fandral in the original Thor before NBC decided to order more episodes of Chuck," says the trade. Variety adds, "While Levi and Sturgess remain frontrunners to play Star-Lord, sources caution that an unnamed third actor may be tested after the holidays."

Guardians of the Galaxy, to be directed by James Gunn, opens August 1, 2014.
